Shopping is an integral part of the cruise experience, both onboard and in the ports of call. In my previous post, I provided an overview of the reasons behind the popularity of shopping while on a cruise (click here to read). In this post, I will delve into the most sought-after jewelry brands, gemstones, and timepieces that cruise guests have been purchasing. Shall we start?

JEWELRY BRANDS

Top jewelry brands sold can vary depending on the cruise line specific onboard shopping offerings and the ports of call your ship will be visiting. However, some popular jewelry brands that are commonly found, include:

Tiffany & Co.: Known for its iconic blue boxes and timeless designs, Tiffany & Co. offers a range of fine jewelry including engagement rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

It's always a good idea to check with your specific cruise line or onboard shops for the most up-to-date information on available brands and products.

GEMSTONES

While cruise ship boutiques and jewelry stores in the ports of call, may not typically feature specific gemstone brands in the same way they do for jewelry brands, they often offer a variety of gemstone jewelry from various designers and collections. Some of the top gemstones that are commonly featured include:

Diamonds: Diamonds are a perennial favorite and are often featured prominently in cruise ship jewelry offerings. Look for brands known for their high-quality diamonds, such as Hearts On Fire, Forevermark, and De Beers or popular cruise brands, such as Crown of Light.

Sapphires: Sapphires, with their rich blue hues, are a popular choice for gemstone jewelry. Look for brands that specialize in sapphire jewelry or incorporate sapphires into their designs, such as Tiffany & Co., Cartier, Bulgari, Le Vian and EFFY.

Rubies: Rubies are prized for their vibrant red color and are often featured in luxury jewelry collections. Look for brands that offer ruby jewelry in classic and contemporary designs, such as Harry Winston, Van Cleef & Arpels, and David Yurman.

Emeralds: Emeralds are known for their lush green color and are a favorite choice for statement jewelry pieces. Look for brands that showcase emeralds in their collections, such as Bvlgari, Chopard, and Graff.

Opals: Opals are prized for their iridescent play-of-color and are often featured in unique and artistic jewelry designs. Look for brands that offer opal jewelry in a variety of styles, such as John Hardy, Stephen Webster, and Alexis Bittar.

Pearls: Pearls are timeless and versatile gemstones that are often featured in elegant jewelry designs. Look for brands that specialize in pearl jewelry, such as Mikimoto, Chanel, YVEL and Lagos.

Alexandrite: Alexandrite is a rare and remarkable gemstone known for its unique color-changing properties. In sunlight, Alexandrite typically appears greenish-blue to green, while in indoor/night light, it transforms to reddish-purple or purplish-red. Look for the Mark Henry (MH) brand, which specializes in Alexandrite jewelry.

Amethyst: Amethyst is known for its deep purple color and is often featured in affordable and fashion-forward jewelry designs. Look for brands that offer amethyst jewelry in a variety of styles and price points, such as Pandora, Swarovski, and Kendra Scott.

Loose Gemstones: Diamonds and Tanzanite are the most popular loose gemstones purchases, and many cruise guests choose to buy them due to two main benefits; first, allowing you to take the gemstone back to your favorite/local designer and create a unique piece of jewelry, and secondly, you MAY get additional tax- and duty-free benefits when purchasing a loose gemstone, compared with a set jewelry piece.

These are just a few examples of the top gemstones that you may find featured in cruise ship boutiques and ports of calls, especially on cruises to the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Alaska. It's essential to check with your specific cruise line or onboard shops for the most up-to-date information on available gemstone jewelry collections and designers. Additionally, consider factors such as your personal style preferences, budget, and desired gemstone characteristics when selecting jewelry during your cruise.

SHOP ON BOARD OR IN THE PORTS OF CALLS?

Every cruise ship operates a retail store and a jewelry store on board, and most ports of call your ship will dock, offer shopping opportunities as well, especially in the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Alaska, where luxury shopping is at its finest, showcasing most (if not all) of the above brands and the largest selections, with most of these luxury items are offered at tax- and duty-free prices.

Most cruise ships will have a "Shopping Guide" available to answer all your questions, share his/her insights, and provide you with guidance and recommendations for the items that you are looking for, as well as a list of retailers that are guaranteed by the cruise line's shopping program.

However, before you make a purchase, it's important to research both options of shopping on-board or shopping ashore in advance and compare prices and product availability. Consider factors such as authenticity, prices, assurance, convenience, and tax- and duty-free benefits to determine the best shopping strategy for your needs. Ultimately, the decision to buy luxury brands on board or in ports of call depends on your personal preferences and priorities.

Happy shopping! 🛍️
